COLESHILL HEATH SCHOOL SUPPORT BREAKFAST2LIVE

Pupils and staff at Coleshill Heath School (Infant School Kitchen), Marlene Croft took part in this year’s Feed The Children (UK)’s Breakfast2Live campaign in a big way. Starting at 8.20am and finishing at 10am on Friday 26th February they enhanced their normal breakfast club by putting on extra choices of egg toasties, bacon sandwiches, breakfast slice, toast, orange juice, apple juice and milk so that the whole school could enter into the spirit of the event.
All the pupils, including Amy and Paige Hastings and Thomas and Jacasta Harding (photo permissions obtained), lead by learning mentor Mrs Sam Turrell, nurture assistant Mrs Angela Logan-Sinclair and teaching assistant Anita Hunt, reflected on how less fortunate children in other countries were who could not enjoy the breakfasts that we take for granted in this country.
The highly organised operation saw the Juniors enjoying their breakfasts before school and the infants breakfasting in their classes with their form teachers between 9.05 and 10.00. The children all donated 50p to the appeal and the staff donated £1.00.
Yes we raised £140.79!We were really pleased with the children and families who donated to such a worthy cause!
Says nurture assistant, Angela Logan-Sinclair, "We raised £140.79 and we were really pleased with the children and families who donated to such a worthy cause! We have a cooking club in school so we saw our breakfast as an extension of that. In England we really love our breakfasts. This campaign reallybrings home to us all that elsewhere in the world there are lots of people that may only have one meal a day or may not have eaten for days. From our fundraising we will really be able to help them. For instance in Africa it costs just 17p to feed a child a day or £5 a month. The children really took on board the plight of those less fortunate than themselves.”
Feed The Children’s regional fundraising manager, Joy Cartwright, says, “It is fantastic how these children have entered into the real spirit of Breakfast2Live campaign. The way the whole school has taken on board the whole essence of the campaign is wonderful. Breakfast2Live is to encourage people to eat a hearty breakfast and help to save someone’s life at the same time. They have done just that. Well done to everyone.”
During the week Monday 22nd February to Sunday 28th February 2010, cafes, restaurants, schools, colleges, businesses and people at home got involved by staging breakfast events to raise money for the charity’s life saving projects in developing countries and breakfast clubs in this country.
As charity chief executive officer Brian Main explains, "Breakfast is the most important meal of the day and we are asked people to take time out for just one meal to think about the thousands of children who need our help in this country and abroad. Hopefully by these school children setting an example this year, lots more people will take part in 2011.”
The charity has a number of ideas that people can use:
- You can host a breakfast and invite friends (get items donated and then charge a small fee of say £5.00 per breakfast).
- Restaurants and cafes can donate a small percentage of the price of a special ‘Breakfast2Live’ on the menu to the charity, or have a collection tin on the day and ask for donations to the charity from everyone eating in the restaurant.
- If you have regular coffee mornings, get a batch of cakes or breakfast muffins donated or baked, invite your friends along and if everyone pays about £1.50 for a cup of tea or coffee and a muffin you can raise money that way.
